In 2020, we partnered with Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation to develop Western Canada’s first Epilepsy Surgery Brain Suite at Foothills Medical Centre. This suite allows doctors to use a minimally invasive treatment called Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy (LITT), which treats seizures through tiny openings instead of large surgical cuts. Using a robotic assistant and MRI guidance, surgeons place a laser probe that safely destroys the small area of brain tissue causing seizures. Compared to traditional surgery, patients have fewer complications, less pain, and shorter hospital stays—usually one to two days, instead of four to five. Today, the Calgary Epilepsy Program performs one of the highest numbers of epilepsy surgeries in Canada and the most LITT procedures, attracting patients from across the country and helping many people safely access life-changing treatment.
